In the summer of 2012, Dr. Will McClintock and Chad Burt unveiled SeaSketch for the first time to an audience of 10,000 at the Esri International User Conference. We worked closely with Sean Hastings of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary to develop a SeaSketch project demonstrating the critical issues around whale strikes in the Santa Barbara Channel.
Using SeaSketch we could quickly sketch, on stage, alternative shipping lane proposals and see their consequences on costs to the shipping industry as well as impacts on whale habitat in real-time. Using a split screen, we also demonstrated how users could use SeaSketch discussion forums to share alternative plans and map views.
The entire show was recorded by Esri. The use of SeaSketch begins at the 5:00 minute mark.
